Buon compleanno alla nostra splendida dark lady!

Dark Lady Sonnets 127-154

127

In the old age black was not counted fair,

Or if it were it bore not beauty's name:

But now is black beauty's successive heir,

And beauty slandered with a bastard shame,

For since each hand hath put on nature's power,

Fairing the foul with art's false borrowed face,

Sweet beauty hath no name no holy bower,

But is profaned, if not lives in disgrace.

Therefore my mistress' eyes are raven black,

Her eyes so suited, and they mourners seem,

At such who not born fair no beauty lack,

Slandering creation with a false esteem,

Yet so they mourn becoming of their woe,

That every tongue says beauty should look so.

Un tempo il nero non pareva bello,
o non portava di beltà il nome;
di beltà ora il nero è vero erede,
ed ha Beltà il marchio di bastarda:

ha ogni mano usurpato Natura,
fa bello il brutto con faccia artefatta;
nome beltà non ha, né sacro asilo,
profanata, se non proprio sbandita.

Perciò ha la mia donna occhi corvini,
occhi a lutto, che sembrano compiangere
le non belle che voglion farsi belle

la creazione col trucco irridendo.
E dà tal grazia il pianto a quel dolore,
che quella a tutti beltà vera appare.

Un niuro bacione.
